Published on 1 March 2023, Paul McCartney: Music Is Ideas. The Stories Behind the Songs (Vol. 1) 1970-1989 , written by Italian author Luca Perasi and whose second volume is planned for 2024, deals with the first twenty years of Paul McCartney’s solo career. “This book can be best described as the ‘musical biography’ of the most important song composer ever,” says the author, who in 2021 was appointed as one of the two official Italian translators of Paul McCartney’s The Lyrics and in 2022 collaborated with MPL on the label copy for The 7” Singles Box.

With a cover design by Tondo Studio (featuring a striking photograph by Clive Arrowsmith, the man who shot the famous Band on the Run sleeve picture) and with the English text and the inner layout curated by Steve Lambley, Volume 1 tells the stories behind Paul McCartney’s songs released between 1970 and 1989. The book consists of 346 song sheets – including songs written by other composers as well as 50 unreleased tracks – each providing detailed information of musicians and recording dates, including anecdotes, contemporary interviews together with exclusive interviews with key personnel by the author. It’s enriched with over 1,000 footnotes and with dozens of illustrations and photographs. Albums, tours and other events provide a background to the stories behind the songs.

“The phrase 'Music is ideas' is taken from the song ‘Talk More Talk’ and aims to provide a guide for the reader on a journey into the astonishing creativity of McCartney, an artist who has elevated the pop song to an art-form,” adds the author. “What are the inspirations that Paul draws on to write his songs? What are his stylistic references? How does he shape his ideas in the recording studio? His post-Beatles catalogue deserves a thorough analysis, using an historical approach. We’re talking about one of the most prolific and successful songwriters ever, and such a comprehensive catalogue of his solo output doesn’t exist. Until now."

Released on 1 January 2024, Peter Gabriel: The Rhythm Has My Soul. The Stories Behind the Songs is a book written by Italian authors Alfredo Marziano and Luca Perasi on the subject of Peter Gabriel’s solo career. “This is the first reference book dedicated to Gabriel’s songs, something I think was really missing. Peter’s an artist whose importance in the history of rock and pop music cannot be overstated, ” says Luca Perasi.

With a cover design by Tondo Studio (featuring a cover image by famed American photographer Arnold Newman, renowned as the “Father of Environmental Portraiture”) and text/inner layout curated by Steve Lambley, The Rhythm Has My Soul tells the stories behind the songs Peter Gabriel released between 1976 and 2023, including his latest album i/o.

“In pure Peter Gabriel’s fashion, this volume has been a long time in the making,” says Alfredo Marziano, who worked for British trade magazines fono and MBI and currently writes for Italian print/online magazines Classic Rock, Rolling Stone and Coolmag. “His songs are multi-layered, cross-referencing pieces of art. They’re a map of subtexts and hypertexts relating to the worlds of politics, visual art and literature, science and technology, psychology and psychoanalysis, and to issues such as human rights and environmental protection. We’re talking about a true Renaissance Man.”

The book consists of 223 song “sheets” – including songs written by other composers as well as unreleased tracks – each providing detailed information about musicians and recording dates, including anecdotes, archive contemporary interviews and together with exclusive interviews the authors have conducted with key personnel and collaborators. It is enriched with over 600 footnotes and with some illustrations. Albums, tours and other events provide a background to the stories behind the songs.

PRESS RELEASE

Published on 18 November 2024, Paul McCartney: Music Is Ideas. The Stories Behind the Songs (Vol. 2) 1990-2012, written by Italian author Luca Perasi and with a third volume planned for 2026, deals with the next twenty-three years of Paul McCartney’s solo career. “Keeping in with the structure of the previous volume, this is the second part of the ‘musical biography’ of one of the most important song composers ever,” says the author.

With a cover design featuring a striking photograph by Clive Arrowsmith, the man who shot the famous Band on the Run sleeve picture, and with the inner layout curated by Steve Lambley, Volume 2 tells the stories behind Paul McCartney’s songs released between 1990 and 2012. The book consists of 250 song entries – including songs written by other composers as well as 26 unreleased tracks – each providing detailed information of musicians and recording dates, anecdotes and contemporary interviews, together with many exclusive interviews with key personnel by the author. It’s enriched with almost 1,000 footnotes, with illustrations and QR codes for a multimedia experience. Albums, tours and other events provide a background to the stories behind the songs.

“During the period under investigation, McCartney began to conceive his artistic career in a broader and more multifaceted way than before,” explains Perasi. “Paul juggles his live activity, his forays into classical and experimental music, his passion for covers and his pop albums, demonstrating an incredible versatility and ability to express himself successfully in all of these areas. An unparalleled achievement.” These different musical genres affect each other. “If we explore McCartney's production of the Nineties, the Noughties and on, we can see their cross-pollination, how they influence each other. There are bits of classical language in his pop songs, and there's a pop touch in his ‘cultured’ ventures,” the author adds. “Paul's forays into the avant-garde also find their way into his albums, and his penchant for catchy melodies can be detected even in records such as those by the Fireman.”

There are some surprising facts and new information in the volume. "The way McCartney decides how to work on an album often goes through different stages," Perasi reveals. "For example, Off the Ground was initially conceived in the opposite way to the 'live in the studio' approach we were told. There was a lot of back and forth between the songs of Chaos and Creation and Memory Almost Full, the two projects coexisted for a while before Paul made a decision. When it comes to Kisses on the Bottom, for the first time we have the complete timeline of the recording sessions, which will make us see the record in a different light.” Paul’s classical works are also explored in detail. “I am very proud of the interview I did with Maestro Carl Davis a long time ago, there are some incredible insights into the process of the Liverpool Oratorio,” adds the author. "A real guide to take the reader on a journey into the astonishing creativity of Paul McCartney, an artist who elevated the pop song to an art form. The Music Is Ideas series is building the most comprehensive catalogue of McCartney's solo work."

RINGO STARR: I PLAY THE PIANO IF IT'S IN CTHE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS (VOL. 1) 1970-1997

Published on 24 March 2025, Ringo Starr: I Play the Piano If It’s in C. The Stories Behind the Songs (Vol. 1) 1970-1997, written by Italian author Luca Perasi and with a second volume planned for 2026, covers the first twenty-eight years of Ringo Starr’s solo career. “The book is the first ever to explore in such depth Ringo’s post-Beatles production, from Sentimental Journey until his All-Starr Band tour in 1997,” says the author. “The title recalls a verse from his song 'Early 1970' and is a half-joking reference to the fact that Ringo is not really a composer but is still capable of producing great music. He's been defined as a drummer who plays melodically, as a guitarist, and it's time to explore his production historically and critically.”

With a cover featuring a 1974 photograph by Mark Sullivan, and with the inner layout curated by Steve Lambley, the volume tells the stories behind Ringo’s songs released between 1970 and 1997. As with the other books from the same SONGS series, the volume consists of 157 song entries – including songs written by other composers and 23 unreleased tracks – each with detailed information on musicians and recording dates, anecdotes and contemporary interviews. It's enriched with illustrations and nearly 250 footnotes. Albums, tours and other events provide the background to the stories behind the songs.

“During the period under consideration, Ringo goes through different phases of his career; he starts as an outsider, but he manages to achieve great success until 1974, first with the two singles 'It Don't Come Easy' and 'Back off Boogaloo', and then with the albums Ringo and Goodnight Vienna,” explains Perasi. “During the second half of the seventies, he became increasingly marginalised in the music business, and the eighties opened amidst a thousand difficulties, with Ringo failing to revive his career through the project of an album in Memphis and his alcohol addiction.” 1988 is the key moment in his life. "He went into rehab and was able to gather all his strength and find the right artistic path with his All-Starr Band, an ever-changing supergroup that surrounded him during the concerts. He returned in 1992 with the album Time Takes Time, one of his best ever.”

The volume also explores other aspects of Ringo’s life and career. “There is also room for Ringo as a composer and singer, as a session musician (with mentions of his most notable collaborations), and even as the creator of the furniture business and the Ring O' Records label,” Perasi reveals. Ringo Starr: I Play the Piano If It's in C is an enjoyable reference book that paints a complete portrait of an extraordinary artist and man.
